[Fanfic] Refuse to Fall, chapter 11

Good graces! My memory of the proper use of livejournal finally returned after I played with it for at least two hours. Two hours!
I guess that tells how long it has been since my last update...For those who are still here with me, GRACIAS!

Gilbert shuddered as he heard the first angry cry from the crowd; just like the first drop of rain, in the blink of an eye it would soon turn into a whipping storm.

Having decided he could not just sit in his room and pretend not to notice what was going on outside, he left his desk and went downstairs as fast as he was able. When he opened the door he saw Ivan was about to knock.

“Come with me,” without usual greetings the Russian gave an order rather hastily. Knowing better than to argue, Gilbert complied without a word, and soon found himself sitting beside Ivan in his bulky black car. Pretending to look out at the passing street view, Gilbert slyly studied Ivan from the reflection of the window. He looked tense, and much excited comparing to his normal careless attitude. His left hand was assumingly playing a short Cossack song on his left knee, while his right hand hid in his pocket all the time. By the size of the pocket, Gilbert was sure the thing held in his hand could probably inflict great pain to someone’s body.

And he had no intention to be this someone.

[Fanfic] Refuse to Fall, chapter 10

Author's note:

Are you surprised? I am. I didn't think I would rewrite it again and be satisfied with but then it just happened. I don't know why, and even don't know how. It just...happened. I started rewriting it yesterday and got it finished this afternoon. AND I LOVE IT. Yes, I'm very satisfied with this chapter. Perhaps because the previous drafts were just way too bad?
Let me know if you like this one. I truely hope you do. Come on, after almost six months of broken promises I must have successfully lowered your threshold of expectation. XD

Enjoy!

PS: Ok, I have to admit that all my knowledge of Berlin comes from Google Earth and various maps on the internet. I don't know  if there was a river road just beside Spree for trolleys (in 1950), let's pretend there was. Or if you want to you can even pretend that Gilbert, being a country, can manage to achieve things that normal humans can't, such as looking at something 1km away without trouble or finish 200m in 19.19s.

Gilbert stared at his own hands like he had never seen them before. He clenched them into fists, squeezing hard, but still couldn't feel the least bit of strength. He sighed, opening his hands again, resuming his little self-discovery activity. There he had just found a few fading calluses on his left palm, apparently giving way to soft skin. He had no memories of when or how he had gotten them.

Indeed, his memories prior to the day when, almost a year ago, he was introduced to the Eastern European countries by Ivan as Comrade Germany were no more than a blur. Yet now and then he would have bizarre visions of someone else's life. In the flashbacks that "someone" had lived defiantly, taking lows and highs in stride, and laughed out loud when he had managed to survive for another day.

(another piece of) Berlin Wall!

So I went to LA last month, and took time to visit the Berlin Wall in the Loyola Marymount University. One of my lifetime wishes is to visit every peice of Berlin Wall in the world! (When I complete it can I receive a Gilbert Beilschmidt as my lifetime reward? Or maybe I should stop playing SIMS 3 to give myself a break?)

Anyway, here're the pictures.

Terrible!

Gilbert's image song is the WORST image song I've ever heard!

THE WORST!!!!!

You call that ROCK?
You call that PRUSSIA???

Simply terrible.

A llama could sing better than that! A LLAMA!

After listening to the song for 30 seconds I was shocked, shattered, and degenerated into the shade of the shadow under my bed.

I was fortunate that the next song in my player was Schlaflied by Die Ärzte, and thus I was able to compose myself and open my web browser to rant on my LJ blog.

I AM RANTING!

MORE RANTING!

*sharp breath*

That's just stupid. They could have chosen any of the Prussian warsongs/march and remix it into an image song that would ROCK. Prussia had half of the best warsongs in the world! (USSR and the Second Reich had the rest)
(that's kind of sad when all three countries I've just referred to are all in past tense)

CALL FOR WARSONGS!

*going back to listening to the Hohenfriedberger Marsch & Preussens Gloria for self-healing from total destruction*

With Love, Prussia. Chapter 1

All right, I'm back.

This is the prequel to Refuse to Fall ... only in the chronological sense.
Speaking of my last story, I still have chapter 10 to 12.5 dormant in my notebook, waiting to be typed into my laptop. I don't foresee these chapters will be seen on internet anytime sooner since I'm not satisfied with what I wrote, and more importantly, I have much less love for DDR than for Prussia (Personally I have trouble treating the two as the same character). At this moment I can't find enough enthusiasm to continue the story, so I decide to start anew, to write a story that is entirely on Prussia and Prussia only. (And yes, I'm a hardcore Prussophile, if anyone haven't figured it out by now. ;p)

And thus I present to you With Love, Prussia, based on the historical events from AD1618 to 1871, which also involves certain prominent characters such as Russia, Brandenburg, Austria, Frederich the Great, and more. The "Little Germany" (aka the Second Reich) might have a cameo scene or so at the end of the story, assuming I can get there. ;P
The first chapter is kind of flat as it serves mainly as introduction. Please bear with me.

Ready to roll out?

====================

Title: With Love, Prussia
Author: V for Valkyrie
Rating: T
Character(s)/Pairing(s): non-slash, Prussia centered, other characters including Brandenburg, Russia, Austria, France, etc
Warnings: OOCness, I suppose... And might not get finished in the end. ;P
Summary: I can only say that this is definitely NOT a love story, regardless of what impression you may get from the title...
Time Frame: AD1618-1871
Disclaimer: Don't own. Don't sue.

With Love, Prussia

1.

"In the name of God I thereby pronounce us Man and Wife," enthused the young state wearing a black doublet, whose breeches and cape were of the same color. He threw a piece of pottery on the porch, watching the ceramic shards bounce off, bringing away bad fortune.

"Now we may proceed to kiss, Prussia my Liebling."

I'm Home!

I'm back from Montreal! In one piece!

You won't believe it: I saw the Berlin Wall in Montreal. Seriously. The Berlin Wall! Although only a piece of it.

I didn't know Belin was giving off the wall as gifts to other parts of the world.  Now I wish Berlin could show some love to my city and give us a piece of the wall...please please huge please? XD

Canada-US

No update during the long weekend

As I'm going off to Montreal to spend the Easter among French-speaking people! Yay~~~

And my knowledge of French is limited to "Parlez-vous anglais, s'il vous plaît?"

That sure will get by. ╮(╯_╰)╭

It's kinda getting disastrous at the moment: I'm leaving for the airport in less than 7 hours and my baggage is still unpacked. I just love spending all my spare time doing non-constructive things. What a life.

And I virtually don't have a schedule for my trip yet. Maybe I'll just hop on a bus and let it take me to some random tourist attraction? I won't understand the French in the broadcast anyway. To add to my misery bravery, I'm going alone, as a solo, young woman traveler, knowing little about the local language, trying her luck in the second largest city in Canada.

Which, I believe, a lot of luck is going to be needed in this trip.

I swear to God that if I manage to return home safe and sound, I WILL go to Germany, again as a solo, young woman traveler, knowing little about the local language, wandering around the cities that used to be a part of what was called Prussia then, to trace the vanished kingdom through the lost memories of history.

(But I also heard both in Montreal and Germany there's a considerable portion of population that speaks fluent English?)

Oh well. Time for packing the baggage, and try to get some sleep...I hope?

By the way, I have finished writing chapter 10 (it turned out to be a much more exciting chapter than I previously expected) and half way through chapter 11, on paper. I just don't have time to upload them in my laptop. I mean, there're much better things to do in life than punch keyboard, like doing some non-constructive things...right? ;p

Happy Easter, folks!!! (And wish me luck!)

Author's notes:
I lied. So this chapter is not the most depressing one, not nearly as the last chapter because, guess what I did, I cut it in half again!
In the past two weeks I was writing and rewriting this chapter. What you are reading now is the 5th draft, which resembles nothing in my first draft. -_-b
I didn't expect it to be so difficult to write this chapter. I guess it's all because of the sensitivity of WWII, which had created such a huge trauma to both sides. The wounds are still fresh. Even Hollywood takes on the subject with most caution. (By the way, I personally consider Valkyrie an American movie inside out. Some actors just look so yankee despite they are wearing German uniforms. They look like Americans, act like Americans, and even speak American English! I find the German movie Zamach W Wilczym Szancu(2004) is much more appealing based on the same story. At least...it looks German. Stalingrad, Amen., and Der Undertang are also great German moives reflecting WWII.)

Only time can heal the wound. Perhaps one day people can talk about WWII and beyond with the same ease as we talk about the seven years war. But hey, just imagine you jump back to circa 1764 and ask a French, "Bonjour, what do you think about losing Acadia (a.k.a. Canada) to the English?" Man, you are creating international crisis, maybe to the personal level too. Make sure you run fast when you see him pulling out his musket.

Enough of me babbling. Let's move on so I can sleep. It's 2:30 in the morning now.

PS: I'll reply the reviews of the last chapter when I'm awake and know what I'm talking about...

8.

In the darkness Gilbert felt someone touching his lips and feeding him water. He opened his eyes only to see grey shadows from past, and then fell unconscious again. His mind drifted through the vast space of darkness, seeing people as well as countries that had used to be part of his life. Among those he saw the one who he had not seen for a very long time; who was left in the back of his mind, buried in a remote place, and never meant to be reminded again.

Yet there he was. Branden.
